1. <New> The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates (Flatiron, $26.99 list price). For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down. Melinda's unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention. She writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world--and ourselves.

2. <New> Letters to Doris - One Woman's Quest to Help Those with Nowhere Else to Turn (Letters Foundation, $20 list price). Doris Buffett's vision sounds simple: provide people and families who have fallen on hard times with a place to be heard, and to match them with resources to help address whatever challenge they face. This effort is difficult, sometimes messy, and a constant reminder of the limitations to truly changing someone else’s circumstances. At the same time, the stories contained in this book present a slice of the community that Doris created with the Letters Foundation.

3. <Charlie's Pick> The Future Is Asian: Commerce, Conflict, and Culture in the 21st Century by Parag Khanna (Simon & Schuster, $29.95 list price,  2019). There is no more important region of the world for us to better understand than Asia - and thus we cannot afford to keep getting Asia so wrong. If the nineteenth century featured the Europeanization of the world, and the twentieth century its Americanization, then the twenty-first century is the time of Asianization. No aspect of life is immune from Asianization. With America's tech sector dependent on Asian talent and politicians praising Asia's glittering cities and efficient governments, Asia is permanently in our nation's consciousness. We know this will be the Asian century. Now we finally have an accurate picture of what it will look like.

4. <Charlie's Pick> Saudi America: The Truth about Fracking and How It's Changing the World by Bethany McLean (Columbia Global Reports, $15.99 list price, 2018). The technology of fracking in shale rock has transformed America into the world's top producer of both oil and natural gas. The U.S. is expected to be "energy independent" and a "net exporter" in less than a decade. McLean digs into the cycles of boom and bust that plague the American oil industry and finds that fracking is a business built on attracting ever-more gigantic amounts of capital investment, while promises of huge returns have yet to bear out. Saudi America tells a remarkable story that will persuade you to think about the power of oil in a new way.
